Moscow and Astana are moving towards joint decisions on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan. This was stated by the head of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev on January 30.

"According to the context of discussions today at the meeting of the heads of government of our countries, we can conclude that we are moving towards joint solutions," he told reporters.

Likhachev also called Kazakhstan a competent country in nuclear technologies. He also noted Astana's leadership in uranium reserves and mining.

The Rosatom CEO said that a Kazakh delegation recently visited the Leningrad nuclear power plant "with a deep dive not only into nuclear technology, but in general into the whole structure of Russia's nuclear power industry."

In addition, Likhachev emphasized Rosatom's readiness to work with Kazakhstan. According to him, the Russian side is very comfortable doing business with Astana.

Earlier in the day, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and his Kazakh counterpart Olzhas Bektenov met. During the bilateral talks, they agreed to continue the countries' joint work in all areas and strengthen strategic partnership.

Prior to that, on January 3, Kazakh President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev said he did not rule out the construction of a second and third power plant, emphasizing the need for a nuclear power plant for the republic. He noted that the nuclear industry will give a powerful impetus to the development of the country's economy, which is currently in energy deficit.

Earlier, on December 23, 2024, Tokayev, at a meeting with Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev, instructed to speed up the implementation of the project to build a nuclear power plant in the country. December 12, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko said that she discussed during a meeting with the President of Kazakhstan assistance to Rosatom in the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country, as well as humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.
