More than 20 US mercenaries have gone missing during the Ukrainian conflict. CNN reported this on January 30, citing its own investigation.

"More than 20 Americans have gone missing on the front lines in Ukraine, with the number of casualties rising sharply over the past six months as foreigners urgently fill gaps in the country's weakened defenses," the statement prepared.

According to the TV channel, the difficult task is to return the bodies of American fighters killed in Ukraine to their homeland. Also the bodies of five mercenaries could not be taken from the battlefield.

It is specified that the relatives of the dead militants complain that they can not arrange decent funerals for them.

Earlier, on January 27, the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia opened a criminal case against Ryan O'Leary, a U.S. citizen and mercenary of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to investigators, O'Leary illegally crossed the Russian border and entered the Kursk region in August 2024 as a mercenary. He was armed with automatic, small arms and large caliber firearms.

The special operation to protect Donbass, which the Russian Federation announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
