Ukraine has changed the name of 20 objects in Odessa as part of decommunization

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved new names for 20 geographical objects in Odessa Region as part of the so-called decommunization and decolonization. This was reported in the Telegram channel Odessa INFO on January 29.

It is noted that the park of the sanatorium named after the Soviet pilot Valery Chkalov was renamed into French, and the park named after the Soviet writer Maxim Gorky became Dzherelny. In addition, a number of streets in Odessa were renamed.

"Zhukovsky Street became Svyatoslav Karavansky Street, and Bunin Street became Nina Strokata-Karavansky Street, the founder of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. Herzen Street was named in honor of Halyna Mohylnytska", - stated in the message.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance noted that the renaming of some streets was unnecessary because the people in whose honor they were named had nothing to do with the alleged "Russian imperial policy".

Earlier, on 17 January, it became known that the Odessa authorities decided to rename a tree named after Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. According to the publication "Strana.ua", the tree is planned to be renamed "Western sycamore".

On the same day, it became known that the Ukrainian government had formed a list of more than 200 geographical objects that will be renamed because their names are associated with Russia. The list includes rivers, tracts, parks, natural monuments, nature reserves, reservoirs, forests and railway stations.

The policy of so-called decolonization was a continuation of "decommunization" in Ukraine, which began in 2015 under the law "On Condemnation of Communist and Nazi Regimes". It prescribes demolishing monuments, dismantling memorial plaques, and renaming all topographical objects whose names are associated with the USSR or Russia. This policy became especially acute after the start of the Russian Federation's special operation to defend Donbass in February 2022.
