The number of Britons who support Britain's exit from the European Union (EU) has reached an anti-record five years after the referendum on the issue. YouGov reported on January 29.

"The number of Britons saying the UK did the right thing by voting to leave the EU has reached an all-time low since the referendum," the social networking site X (formerly Twitter) said in a post.

According to the poll, 30% of participants believe that Britain's exit from the EU is a justified decision, while 55% opposed the move.

Earlier, on November 3, 2024, economic secretary to the UK Treasury Tulip Sidik said that the UK is only to face 60% of the full consequences of the kingdom's decision to leave the EU following the Brexit referendum result in 2016. For example, the kingdom's imports and exports will be 15% lower than if the country had remained in the EU.

In late August, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that in the first weeks in power after winning the parliamentary elections on July 4, the Labor Party found a "black hole" of £22 billion (€25.8 billion) in the UK state budget. In addition to the kingdom's economic problems, he drew attention to the social ones: vandalism, racism and violence reign in the country.

Before that, on May 25, the director of the British Institute for Fiscal Studies (Institute for Fiscal Studies, IFS) Paul Johnson said that the low growth rate of the economy and the large national debt of the UK led to the fact that the country is waiting for the most serious financial crisis in the last 70 years.

The Brexit referendum was held in June 2016 and 52% of UK citizens were in favor of leaving the EU. The Kingdom officially left the union on January 31, 2020, and the transition period ended 11 months later. The UK has been in the EU for 47 years. In May 2023, a poll was conducted among Britons regarding the country's exit from the EU. According to its results, 56% of respondents said that it was a mistake for the UK to leave the EU. 31% were in favor of Brexit.
