The expert named the distinguishing features of freshly cut roses

On Wednesday, January 29, Svetlana Gorkunova, a flower expert and head of the floral division of Gorkunov Group of Companies, spoke about ways to distinguish freshly cut flowers from those that have been prolonged with the help of chemicals.
She advises to check the freshness of roses by the bud: in fresh roses it is dense and elastic, and in old - soft and flaccid, often with yellowed petals. The absence of outer petals can signal that the seller removed them to hide the age of the flower. Fresh roses also have a rich green bud base, while older roses are dull, and the bud itself may be slightly tilted due to loss of stem support.
"The leaves and stem can also tell much about the condition of the rose, although their appearance is often deceptive. The lower leaves of flowers prepared for shipping are always removed, and the remaining leaves retain a deep green color even in old roses. Nevertheless, the fresh flower leaves are elastic and shiny, they tightly adhere to the stem and restore the shape after bending," - her words "Gazeta.Ru".
The expert noted that fresh roses have a rich aroma due to essential oils, while fading roses lose their flavor. Also, fresh roses are heavier due to moisture, and their stem should be slightly crisp when bent, not soft.
Earlier, on November 23, 2024, analysts at ATOL reported that flower prices rose 11% over the year. So, in that month, the average amount spent on a bouquet amounted to 2,567 rubles. The median cost of one rose in the store amounted to 182 rubles.
