US President Donald Trump has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for whom the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant, to the White House as the first foreign guest under the new US administration to discuss the settlement of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian on January 29, citing an official letter.

The invitation said that Trump would be expecting his counterpart on February 4 to "discuss ways to achieve peace in Israel and neighboring states, as well as ways to counter common rivals."

The American leader said he would be honored to receive Netanyahu as his first foreign guest. At the same time, Trump is not sure about the sustainability of the truce between Israel and the Palestinian radical movement Hamas.

On February 4, the invitation to the White House was reported by Netanyahu's office.

Earlier, on January 19, the first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect. This phase will last 42 days, during which 33 Israeli hostages and about 1.9 thousand Palestinian prisoners should be released. So far, the movement has handed over seven hostages to Israel in exchange for 290 Palestinians.

Before that, on November 21, 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant for crimes against humanity. According to the court, Israeli politicians have deliberately and willfully deprived civilians in Gaza of the conditions necessary for survival, including food, water, medicine and medical supplies, fuel and electricity. The UK, the Netherlands and Estonia expressed their readiness to implement the court ruling, while the US and France opposed it.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian movement Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
