Peskov linked the translation of the Doomsday Clock to extreme tensions in the world

Moving the hands of the Doomsday Clock closer to "nuclear midnight" is a reflection of the level of tension in the world. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 29.
"That the atmosphere is indeed extremely tense, and that the number of conflicts - both frozen, unresolved, and hot conflicts - is off the scale, this is indeed true. So there are, of course, reasons for concern," he said, commenting on moving the hands of the Doomsday Clock one second closer to midnight.
Peskov added that it is not the West that is doing this, but "certain scientists" who thus show their vision of the situation in the world.
The transfer by one second of the Doomsday Clock, which reflects the level of tension associated with the nuclear threat, became known the day before. Now their hands show 89 seconds to "nuclear midnight" - a record time close to midnight.
On December 17, 2024, political scientist, economist and Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs said that the United States is provoking a nuclear war with Russia by escalating the situation around Ukraine. The analyst said that by escalation he meant the situation in the Middle East and the US decision to strike US missiles deep inside the Russian Federation.
The West regularly stirs up hysteria among the citizens of its countries, warning of an allegedly possible imminent war with Russia. Western European media and experts refer to the successes of Russia's military in Ukraine and prophesize that the country will "go on to conquer the whole world." Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that the country is not going to go to war with NATO.
