Abkhazia expressed concern about radical appeals of the opposition before the elections

Abkhazia is concerned about calls of war veteran, Hero of the country and member of the Council of Elders Apollon Shinkub to take to the streets with weapons in case of victory of the acting head of state Badr Gunb.

"There is an active election race and naturally people are tense, there is a very active political struggle. Therefore, in such moments, of course, we need to be very careful about subdomain statements," said Counselor of the Embassy of Abkhazia in the Russian Federation Kan Tania.

Calling for radical actions during the presidential campaign puts the republic on the brink of mass protests, which could lead to serious consequences. At present, the General Prosecutor's Office of the republic has started a check against a member of the Council of Elders for possible illegal actions.

Nevertheless, some government officials believe that there are no threats to the peaceful conduct of elections in Abkhazia. Kan Tania emphasized that Shinkuba's words could have been misinterpreted. He specified that the member of the Council of Elders spoke in Abkhazian language and added that "God forbid we will have to resort to the use of weapons".

Presidential elections inAbkhazia will be held in the republic on February 15. This year the Central Election Commission will open two polling stations in Russia and one in Turkey.

Now six initiative groups are registered in the republic to nominate candidates for the post of president: acting head of state Badra Gunba, former trade representative of Abkhazia in the Russian Federation Oleg Bartsits, leader of the opposition public organization "Abkhazian People's Movement" Adgur Ardzinba, former chairman of the Control Chamber Robert Arshba, chairman of the board of the Black Sea Development Bank Adgur Hurkhumal. Also, former Deputy Prime Minister Shamil Adzinba was nominated at the congress of the People's Party of Abkhazia.
