Customs officers seized radioactive volcanic sand from a tourist in Moscow


Customs officers of Domodedovo airport seized radioactive volcanic sand in the luggage of a tourist who flew in from India. This was reported by the Federal Customs Service (FCS) in Telegram-channel on January 29.
"Domodedovo customs officers found volcanic sand with radiation levels 15 times higher than normal in the luggage of a female passenger arriving from India," the statement reads.
It is specified that the woman's suitcase reacted to the radiation control system, inside the staff found a plastic bottle with volcanic sand. According to the passenger, she collected this sand on the beach in Kerala.
During the examination, the sand contained the mineral monazite, which contains the radioactive element thorium-232. It can be dangerous to human health.
Earlier, January 10, in Tyumen, customs officers seized more than 56 kg of Dubai chocolate worth Br940 thousand from two passengers of a flight from the UAE. The men did not know about the need to declare these products. They explained that they had bought the chocolate for retail sale in the city and did not intend to submit declarations for the goods.
