Armenia's accession to the European Union (EU) will mean the republic's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which in turn will have certain consequences. This was stated by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk on January 29.

"The decision is very obvious here. Opening markets with the European Union will mean closing markets with the Eurasian Economic Union. Otherwise, our producers in the Eurasian Economic Union will suffer. This is obvious: the zeroing of important customs rates with the EU will automatically mean a return to customs and customs tariffs with the EAEU," said Deputy Prime Minister.

Overchuk also stressed that the process of Armenia's accession to the EU will take a long time and urged to wait for the results of the parliamentary hearings scheduled for February 11.

"But here they absolutely clearly know that the consequences will be like this. No one should have any illusions here," he emphasized.

Earlier, on January 24, the Armenian Parliament's Commission on European Integration approved a draft law on the start of the republic's accession to the European Union. It is now expected to be considered at the parliamentary session from February 11-14 as part of the main agenda.

The Armenian government approved the draft law on the beginning of the process of the state's accession to the European Union at a session on January 9. The foreign minister of the Transcaucasian republic said at the time that relations between the country and the association had been developing "intensively and dynamically" in recent years.

Commenting on the bill, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it is hypothetically impossible to combine membership in the EU and the EAEU, as the two associations have a large number of differences. He pointed out that interaction with the EAEU brings benefits to Yerevan.
