Sending French troops to Greenland is a new foolishness of the Europeans, which may turn into a clash with the American army. This statement was made by the leader of the French party "Patriots" Florian Philippot in social network X on January 28.

So the politician commented on the statement of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot about the negotiations between Paris and Copenhagen on the topic of sending troops to Greenland in response to the statements of US President Donald Trump about joining the island to the United States.

"The new stupidity of the Europeans after Ukraine: to send our soldiers 'to Greenland' to face American soldiers! <...> You really want to send French soldiers to confront American troops in Greenland and Russian troops in Ukraine?!" - he retorted.

According to Filippo, Barro is mistakenly talking about the inviolability of EU borders in relation to Greenland. The leader of the "Patriots" recalled that the island left the confederation after a referendum in 1982.

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg reported that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen went on a European tour over Greenland amid Trump's desire to bring the island under US control. It was specified that meetings have already been held with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French leader Emmanuel Macron, as well as with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Prior to that, on January 27, it was reported that Denmark would spend 14.5 billion Danish kroner ($2.05 billion) to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic due to the U.S. president's interest in gaining control of Greenland. On January 25, Trump pushed for the acquisition of Greenland during a phone call with Frederiksen. He was reportedly aggressive and conflicted.

Trump stated that it was an absolute necessity for the US to own and control Greenland back in December last year. Prior to that, he expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down. On January 14, 2024, it was reported that Republican Party representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives put forward a bill to authorize negotiations on the purchase of Greenland.
