On January 29, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on the exploits of servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces (AF) committed during a special military operation (SMO).

The ministry noted the actions of Captain Viktor Shaldin, who, leading a group of Russian servicemen, carried out a combat mission to search for enemy armed formations in a given area. Moving through the terrain, he detected a group of militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) preparing an ambush on the intended route of the Russian Armed Forces convoy. Having instantly oriented himself in the situation, Shaldin decided to attack the enemy first.

The captain together with his group, having made a maneuver, using uneven terrain, stealthily went to the rear of the Ukrainian militants and, having caught the enemy by surprise, destroyed part of the enemy's manpower and equipment. The sudden and decisive actions of the Russian servicemen prevented the enemy from reorganizing into a combat order to repel the attack. Having suffered losses, the enemy was forced to abandon their positions and retreat. Shaldin's actions made it possible to thwart an impending ambush and also ensured that the convoy arrived in the designated area without casualties.

In addition, the Defense Ministry drew attention to the merits of Sergeant Denis Cherkasov, who, acting as part of an evacuation team, carried out the tasks of providing medical assistance and evacuating wounded Russian servicemen from forward positions to medical facilities. Repeatedly being on the line of contact under constant artillery fire and attacks by the AFU's FPV drones, Cherkasov provided first aid and emergency treatment to wounded soldiers, personally participated in anesthetizing, bandaging and stopping bleeding for wounds of varying severity, and evacuated the injured to a safe area.

In total, during the special military operation, the non-commissioned officer provided medical assistance to more than 70 servicemen. Cherkasov's selfless actions and professional skills helped preserve the lives and health of the Russian fighters and ensured the fulfillment of the unit's combat missions.

Earlier, on January 28, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that calculations of Msta-B guns and BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher systems (MLRS) of the "South" group of troops eliminated up to 100 AFU fighters and several combat vehicles in the Kurakhov direction. The ministry noted that the BM-21 "Grad" calculations of the motorized rifle regiment worked on the outskirts of the Dachne settlement in the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR).

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
