Military expert assessed the prospects for the creation of its "Iron Dome" in the U.S.

Andrei Koshkin, a retired colonel, military expert, head of the Department of Political Analysis and Social and Psychological Processes at the Plekhanov Russian Economic University, has expressed the opinion that the United States may create its own missile defense system similar to the Israeli "Iron Dome," but doubted that it would be effective.

In a conversation with Lenta.Ru on Tuesday, January 28, the expert noted that we are talking about an analog of the Israeli system, then "there are no special problems," and it will be produced only in the United States. In Israel, the Americans participated in the development of "Iron Dome", and they have an idea about this system.

Koshkin pointed out that European countries are also interested in such a system, including Ukraine. Meanwhile, problems of military-technical complexity may arise with the coverage of a large area.

The expert reminded that the area of Israel is only 8.5 thousand square miles, and the United States will have to cover an area of millions of square kilometers.

"We need to take into account the effectiveness of the Iron Dome in Israel, because everyone has the impression that if it works well in Israel, it will work everywhere, including the vast expanses of the United States," the expert noted.

Earlier, on January 28, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the creation of the U.S. missile defense system "Iron Dome". The purpose of this development is to prevent the threat of attack by ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles on the US, clarifies RT. The document was signed in an airplane on the way from Florida, where Trump spoke at the convention of the Republican party caucus in Congress, writes NSN.

The system will have to be responsible for defense throughout the country. The text of the document says that the Secretary of Defense must provide the President with a "reference architecture" and "implementation plan" for the project within 60 days from the date of issuance of the decree, notes 360.ru.

At the same time, political scientist and military analyst Alexander Zimovsky told the website aif.ru that Trump is now to some extent backing himself against the backdrop of the increased military power of Russia and China. Thus, he is signaling that the U.S. is capable of defending itself even if it is the first to start a nuclear conflict.

As the website kp.ru notes, the issue of defense is on the second, if not the first, place for the U.S. president. It is not for nothing that he addressed the leaders of the EU countries with a demand to increase spending on this area to 5% of their GDP.

Also on January 28, retired military expert Colonel Viktor Litovkin told Izvestia that the United States has practically no missile defense system (BMD), and the state has no chance of creating an Iron Dome in the coming years. Litovkin said that the US has a joint air defense system with Canada. However, he noted, this system is ineffective because it only protects the country from missiles from the north.
