At the end of January, Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is celebrated around the world. It is one of the most important holidays not only in the Middle Kingdom, but in all of East Asia. The celebrations last two weeks, during which people treat themselves to traditional dishes, wear red clothes and exchange gifts. "Izvestia" prepared greetings and cards for the Chinese New Year.
Happy Chinese New Year - 2025: beautiful postcards
In China and some other Asian countries, the New Year is celebrated more than once. Thus, in the Celestial Empire it is met first on the Gregorian calendar, on the night of December 31 to January 1, and then on the lunar calendar - in late January, and if the first holiday is considered a winter holiday, the second is associated with the imminent arrival of spring. Hence the second name of the Chinese New Year - Spring Festival (Chunjie).
Traditionally, the Chinese New Year is celebrated on the second new moon after the winter solstice (December 21). Therefore, the first day of the celebration falls between January 21 and February 21. In 2025, the holiday will run from January 29 to February 12.
There is also a legend associated with Chunjie that explains some of the traditions of the holiday. It says that in ancient times, China suffered devastating raids by a monster called Nian (God). It attacked people, devoured livestock and crops. To escape it, villagers fled high into the mountains. This continued until a mysterious traveler revealed to them the monster's weakness - it was afraid of the color red and loud noises. By the next time Nyan came, the people had made many red decorations and prepared bamboo, which crackles loudly when set on fire. Dazzled by the noise and bright colors, Nyan escaped. Since then, the monster has not bothered people, and a new holiday appeared on the calendar.
Today, Chinese New Year is celebrated not only in the Middle Kingdom, but also in Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, as well as in many European countries and the United States. The celebrations are held with great fanfare. People wear red clothes, decorate the house with paper lanterns and signs with wishes for good luck and prosperity. Red envelopes with small amounts of money are prepared for relatives and friends. It is believed that together with them a person receives happiness and health.
For two weeks, Chinese people spend time with family, eat traditional jiaozi dumplings and participate in festivities. Schoolchildren and students enjoy vacations, because educational institutions do not work during the Chinese New Year. The celebration concludes with the Lantern Festival, a colorful procession with thousands of paper lanterns of different shapes and sizes.
In addition to red envelopes on the Chinese New Year it is customary to give tea, ceramic and porcelain dishes, oranges and tangerines - fruits associated with wealth because of their yellow color, like gold coins. In European countries, in addition to traditional gifts, cards depicting the main attributes of the holiday - lanterns, dragons, clappers and the patron saint of the year, one of the 12 zodiacal animals - are often given.
Greeting cards can be accompanied by warm wishes. Here are some examples:
"Congratulations on the Chinese New Year! I wish you happiness, wealth and prosperity. Let luck accompany you in all endeavors, your wallet is full of money, and you don't even have to think about going to the doctor!"
"Happy Chinese New Year, friends! May your life be as bright as festive fireworks, as rich as the taste of your favorite dishes, and as joyful as the Lantern Festival! I wish you vigor, good health, prosperity and harmony in your family"
"Happy Chinese New Year! May it be rich in fortunate coincidences, pleasant surprises, changes for the better and fateful meetings! I wish you to celebrate every day as a holiday, believe in yourself and easily conquer the steepest peaks!"
Chinese New Year in 2025: cards with Snake, wishes
In China and other eastern countries each year is associated with one of the 12 zodiacal animals - Rat, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog or Pig. Thus to each animal corresponds one of five elements (water, earth, metal, fire and wood), and also certain color (green, red, yellow, blue and white). The result is a 60-year calendar cycle in which each year is assigned a unique combination of animal, element and color.
The patroness of 2025 is the Green Wood Snake. It is considered one of the wisest and most judicious animals of the Eastern calendar. According to beliefs, the year of the Snake is a time of change, but not upheaval. Under the watchful eye of the mistress of the year there is a renewal of both the inner world of man and everything that surrounds him. Wooden Snake favors hardworking, consistent and flexible people who keep their word and are able to adapt to changing conditions.
It is believed that to attract good luck and prosperity it is necessary to have a figurine of the symbol of the year or its image in the house. In recent years, digital postcards are also popular, which can be saved on your phone or sent in messenger to your loved ones, accompanied by pleasant wishes. "Izvestia" prepared pictures of the Green Wood Snake and congratulations on the Chinese New Year:
"Congratulations on the Chinese New Year! May the Green Wooden Snake bring harmony, love and prosperity to your home. May misfortunes and failures remain in the past as dropped scales, and instead of them will come success and happiness. I wish you health, good luck and prosperity!"
"Happy Spring Festival, Happy Year of the Green Wood Snake! May it pass safely and joyfully. I wish you to deftly circumvent obstacles on the way to your goal, without regret to get rid of the old and find a new - new happiness, new inspiration and a new beginning!"
"Happy Year of the Green Tree Snake! May the generous mistress of this year give you sincere love and endless happiness! I wish you to have fun on Chinese New Year and attract as much luck, wealth and joy into your life as possible!"
"Happy Chinese New Year, the year of the Green Wood Snake! May love and wealth come into your life together with your dear guests, and festive fireworks light up the fires of happiness in your soul! I wish you success in achieving your cherished dreams, confidence in your abilities, wonderful journeys, joyful meetings and endless luck!"
