Spammers in 2024 were most often engaged in phishing, a type of Internet fraud aimed at gaining access to users' confidential data - logins and passwords, according to data from the Yandex 360 platform, which was reviewed by Izvestia on January 29.

Experts explained that phishing is often a mass mailing of e-mails on behalf of popular brands, as well as personal messages inside various services, for example, on behalf of banks or in social networks.

Also in the lead is "delicate" spam - emails that most often do not carry any direct threat. These include intrusive advertising and newsletters.

The most popular types of spam were emails with attached malicious files, messages offering training courses, raffles, prizes, advertisements for casinos and bookmakers and job offers.

At the same time, according to the platform, in 2024, the activity of spammers began to grow in spring and continued throughout the summer. By the beginning of September, their activity began to decrease, which differs from the usual seasonality of previous years. They also changed their habits before the New Year: during this period spammers practically did not increase their activity.

It is also noted that over the past five years, the number of mail spam has decreased by almost 30%.

Earlier, on January 17. it was reported that since the end of December 2024 fraudsters have been actively using the themes of New Year promotions, sales and gifts to attract the attention of victims. They used various methods, including phishing, social engineering and phone calls from spoofed numbers, according to VTB data.
