It is important to be able to preserve a cosmetic product, because most of the assets are unstable and can degrade in contact with light and air, said Natalia Tkachenko, cosmetic chemist, founder of the beauty brand Roz Mary. The expert told Izvestia on January 28 how cosmetic packaging affects the quality of the product.

"Most of the assets are unstable, destroyed in contact with light and air. And if the assets are destroyed, it turns out that the cream, even if it was initially rich in assets, will turn into a pacifier and we will not wait for the effect. Light is a source of energy, it can act as an initiator of chemical transformations. Air contains oxygen, which is a powerful oxidizer," she clarified.

In addition, she said, vegetable oils, especially those rich in valuable polyunsaturated fatty acids, are particularly sensitive to light and air. Improper containers can lead to rapid oxidation of fatty acids, as a result, oils not only lose their useful properties, but can on the contrary harm.

"The only container that can protect emulsions from the damaging effects of light and air is an opaque vacuum dispenser. Inside such a vial there is another container. When pressed, the bottom of the inner bottle is pulled upwards following the cream coming out. The main difference between standard bottles with a tube inside is that inside the vacuum bottle does not get air. If the supply is through a tube, then air will go inside, provoking oxidation. Such a bottle can protect only from light, but oxidation by air still occurs," - Tkachenko, specifying that there are no tubes in the vacuum bottle.

The cosmetologist also drew attention to the fact that the standard jars with a screw cap do not protect the cream not only from light, but also from air. With each opening of such a bottle, the contents will be in contact with air and light, they in turn trigger various chemical processes, as a result of which the effectiveness of the cream can decrease.

"Even if the manufacturer put effective components in high working dosages, then because of the wrong container, they quickly degrade, lose their effectiveness. And in the end it's just money in the wind. In addition, this approach to the choice of containers can discredit some assets. For example, vitamins A and C, which work well with age changes and pigmentation, with improper storage for several weeks can lose their effectiveness, and you just will not see the effect of them, "- said the chemist.

Another important point, the expert called the protection of the emulsion from bacteria and fungi. For this purpose, the manufacturer uses a preservative. The cosmetologist specified that the preservative is a poison. But for microorganisms, the dosage is lethal, but for humans - not. To use a cream in which bacteria and fungi actively multiply is much more harmful, which is why the preservative is the lesser of two evils, Tkachenko believes.

"But in open containers, the product requires much more preservative, because every time you open the product gets bacteria and fungi that are free in the air. To prevent them from growing colonies, the product must be powerfully preserved. And we remember that the preservative - not the most useful asset for the skin in cosmetics. And it must be a minimum sufficient amount to protect against bacteria. And it is the vacuum dispenser that helps to provide this amount of preservative," - concluded the expert.

Earlier, on January 27, Tkachenko told Izvestia that there are several trends in the beauty sector in 2025, including environmental friendliness and transparency of cosmetics. According to her, consumers have become more and more interested in the composition of products.
