As a result of fighting in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo at least 17 people were killed and about 370 others were injured. This was reported by Agence France-Presse on January 27, citing sources.

"In the besieged city of Goma in the DR Congo killed at least 17 people and about 370 injured," - said in a message in the social network X (former Twitter).

It is specified that the clash occurred between detachments of the Congolese rebel group "March 23 Movement" and the Congolese army.

In early January, the Congolese rebel group "March 23 Movement" intensified its actions in the eastern part of the DRC. On January 27, rebel leader Cornel Nangaa announced that he had taken control of the town of Goma.

The situation escalated after the DR Congo government broke diplomatic relations with Rwanda and accused the country of supporting the rebels, who launched a new offensive on the town of Goma. On January 26, the DR Congo's foreign ministry announced the immediate withdrawal of its diplomats in the Rwandan capital of Kigali and ordered the country's embassy in Kinshasa to cease operations within 48 hours.

On the same day, the UN Security Council announced an emergency meeting amid fighting in DR Congo and demanded that the Congolese rebel group March 23 Movement stop advancing in the east of the country.

On January 27, the Russian diplomatic mission in Kinshasa urged Russians in the DRC capital to exercise caution in connection with possible demonstrations. It was noted that there were no appeals from Russians in the area of aggravation of the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities. The ministry noted that Moscow condemns the actions of the Congolese rebel group "March 23 Movement" (M23), which attacked the UN mission for stabilization in the DR Congo (MONUSCO), and expresses condolences to the families of the dead peacekeepers from South Africa and Uruguay.
