Media learned about the EU's plans to postpone for a month the publication of the plan to reject Russian gas

The European Commission (EC), with a certain degree of probability, will postpone a month later the official publication of the "roadmap", which will outline a plan for the European Union (EU) countries with specific measures that they need to take to completely abandon fuel imports from Russia, including liquefied natural gas (LNG). This was reported by Bloomberg agency on January 27, citing sources.

It is noted that instead of the end of February, as planned, the EC may present its plan on March 26. The reasons for the change of dates are not said.

A group of 10 European countries has been pushing for tougher measures against Russia by imposing restrictions on natural gas and LNG. However, the effort has been complicated by the need to secure unanimity among all 27 members of the bloc, the media outlet points out.

"The EC has set itself a non-binding goal to be free of Russian supplies by 2027," the agency writes.

Earlier on January 27, Italian publication L'AntiDiplomatico due to the refusal from Russian gas, the European Union (EU) faced rising costs. According to the publication, Ukraine's decision to stop gas transit from Russia to Europe provoked a new energy crisis.

On the same day, the head of EU diplomacy Kaja Kallas officially confirmed the extension of anti-Russian sanctions by six months. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó added that the European Commission had given the country guarantees to "preserve the protection of oil supplies to the EU", which is a security issue for the entire European Union.

On January 1, 2025, Gazprom said it would suspend gas supplies through Ukraine. On the same day, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo noted that this would have drastic consequences for the EU, but not for Russia.

At the end of August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term expired on May 20, 2024) said that the country would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia, which expired at the end of 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin later pointed out that Moscow did not refuse to transit gas through Ukraine.
