- A political scientist assessed the likelihood of California's withdrawal from the United States

American political scientist Malek Dudakov has ruled out the possibility of California's secession from the United States, as there is no such mechanism in the country.
In a conversation with Lenta.Ru on Monday, January 27, the expert noted that "this is nothing more than information noise discussed by journalists."
Dudakov also doubted that the initiators of California's secession from the U.S. will be able to collect the required number of signatures for the referendum. The idea is supported by an absolute minority of Americans.
The Americanist also said that a large number of Democrats are dissatisfied with the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election, and "they would like to show him such a figure in his pocket". In reality, no more than 15-20% of the country can support such an idea.
"But even they treat it as something abstract. There is no real campaign for California's exit," Dudakov concluded.
Earlier on January 27, it became known that in California started collecting signatures for withdrawal from the United States under the name Calexit immediately after the petition received official registration. It must collect more than 50% of signatures from the total number of voters to put the initiative on the referendum, writes the website kp.ru. According to 360.ru, the petition must garner at least 546 thousand votes by July 22.
If the campaign is successful, a commission will be created to prepare a report on the viability of California as an independent state, the work of which will require about $2 million annually. At least another $10 million could be spent on expenses related to organizing the vote, RT reports.
As Newsweek notes, if California were independent, its economy would be fifth in the world: below Japan, but above India and Britain, Life.ru notes.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump promised the Los Angeles neighborhoods affected by fires in California to increase water supplies.
