Ukraine 's public debt has grown to $166.1 billion by the end of 2024, Verkhovna Rada deputy Daniil Getmantsev said on January 27.
"The state and state-guaranteed debt amounted to 6,980.9 billion hryvnias, in the currency equivalent of $166.1 billion," he wrote in his Telegram channel, citing data from the country's finance ministry.
Last year, Kiev's debt increased by $20.7 billion, or 14.3%, the MP added. Expenses for servicing the state debt amounted to 8.8% of the total fund of the Ukrainian budget, while the debt-to-GDP ratio was about 90.4%.
Earlier, on 24 January, the US magazine Responsible Statecraft called the West's hopes that Ukraine would repay its debts with its natural resources vain. The author assessed the current situation as economic madness.
Before that, on January 3, the head of the Federation Council's commission on information policy, Aleksey Pushkov , pointed out that Ukraine was unviable without financial aid from the West. He drew attention to the fact that this fact was recognized in the Verkhovna Rada as well.
