Russian embassy in DR Congo urged Russians to be careful while traveling

The Russian Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo urges Russians in Kinshasa to be careful in connection with possible demonstrations on January 27. This was reported the same day by the press attaché of the diplomatic representative of the Russian Federation Alina Mirzakhanova.
There have been no appeals from Russians in the area of aggravation of the situation in the DRC, she noted.
"It is reported that local youth organizations plan to hold demonstrations in support of the national army on January 27. In this regard, we urge Russian citizens living in Kinshasa to exercise caution when moving around the city," Mirzakhanova said in a special message to the media. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
In addition, the press attaché of the Russian Embassy said that the embassy in Kinshasa is working normally and the situation in the capital is calm. According to her, tension remains in the city of Goma in the east of the DRC.
"Due to the offensive on the city by detachments of the March 23 Movement rebel group, the work of Goma's international airport has been suspended and the airspace has been closed. Residents do not leave their homes," Mirzakhanova stated.
In addition, she said that Russian employees of the UN diplomatic mission in Kinshasa are safe and the diplomatic mission is in constant contact with them.
In late January, it was reported that the Congolese rebel group Movement of March 23 (M23) had launched an offensive against the town of Goma in eastern DRC. On January 25, The Guardian reported that clashes were reported between its members and the Congolese army.
The escalation came after the DR Congo government severed diplomatic relations with Rwanda and accused the country of supporting the rebels, who launched a new offensive on the town of Goma.
On January 26, the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) foreign ministry announced the immediate withdrawal of its diplomats in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, and ordered the country's embassy in Kinshasa to cease operations within 48 hours. On the same day, the UN Security Council announced an emergency meeting amid fighting in DR Congo and demanded that the Congolese rebel group Movement of March 23 (M23) stop advancing in the east of the country.
On January 27, M23 leader Cornel Nangaa announced that he had taken control of the town of Goma.
