The UK navy mistook a whale for Russian underwater drones, The Sun newspaper reported.

"We have analyzed the sounds and now believe it was a marine mammal. A whale," said a British navy command spokesman.

According to the newspaper, the military initially believed that Russia allegedly could have dropped a "listening device" on the seabed between the island of Raasey and Applecross in northwest Scotland. At first, analysts considered the recorded sounds anthropogenic, which has not happened in this area in 55 years.

In August 2024, the carcass of the whale Hvaldimir was found off the coast of Norway, which some media have been watching since 2019, calling it a "Russian spy". After that, a version was put forward that the animal was shot, but the Norwegian police denied it. It was specified that the real cause of death of the whale was a stick stuck in its mouth, which caused a bacterial infection.
