Polish President Andrzej Duda's words that Russian gas supplies to Europe should not be restored even in the case of peace agreements between Russia and Ukraine are his attempt to please Western partners. Warsaw may quickly "reassume" if other European leaders who oppose Moscow change their opinion on buying gas from Russia. This was stated by State Duma deputy Boris Gladkikh on January 27.

Duda made the corresponding statement earlier in the day on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to the Polish leader, the Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines should be dismantled because they "pose a great threat to Ukraine".

"The president of Poland is not eternal, and there may be other politicians in his place who will quite rationally approach this issue. Therefore, I regard this statement as nothing more than politicking and an attempt once again to please those who today seek to harm the Russian Federation and support sanctions against the Russian Federation," Duma TV for Izvestia quoted MP Gladkikh's commentary for Duma TV.

He also admitted that Poland may continue to support the anti-Russian course. At the same time, the interlocutor of the publication believes that if Warsaw changes its views on the purchase of gas from Russia, it is not known whether Moscow will be interested in the sale. The politician emphasized that the Russian side is currently doing everything to ensure that the country's economy continues to develop, including its raw materials sector. However, even if Western countries want to buy gas from Russia again, Moscow will need tangible guarantees of compliance with the agreements amid the sanctions of recent years.

Earlier, on January 20, Bundestag deputy from Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice party, Sevim Dagdelen, called for the resumption of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and the import of Russian oil. She pointed out that otherwise Germany will continue to suffer economic decline as "self-destructive sanctions" against Russia tighten.

In late December 2024, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic suggested that the United States may wish to acquire Nord Stream within a year to supply gas from Russia to Europe. At the same time, Igor Yushkov, analyst of the National Energy Security Fund, considered such a scenario unlikely.

According to the December estimates of the Swiss company Transliq AG, the costs in case of repairing Nord Stream-2 may amount to up to €633 million, taking into account the future operation of the pipeline.

Leaks at the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines were discovered in September 2022. Two powerful underwater explosions were registered at the pipelines. Traces of explosives were found at the accident site. Russia is seeking an international investigation into the terrorist attacks. In February 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson that the CIA was responsible for the explosions.
