On January 27, soldiers of the 40th Guards Marine Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces' Vostok group of troops told Izvestia how they managed to avoid traps prepared by the Ukrainian army during the capture of the village of Velyka Novoselka in the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR).
According to the commander of the assault group with the call sign Khayur, their successes are the merit of the instructors who were responsible for the brigade's combat training.
The deputy platoon commander with the call sign Funtik said that the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) was organized illiterately - the Russian fighters managed to bypass the traps prepared by the militants.
"We took Novoselka, the western part. <...> There were local people, we helped them - gave them water, food. Covered them with fire support so that [the Ukrainian military] would not allow harm to civilians. The enemy was neutralized, those who resisted remained in place, the rest were captured and brought to the top leadership," the military officer said.
The infantrymen also said that civilians are always happy when they see the Russian military entering a populated area. Khayur said that one elderly woman cried with happiness when she realized that the Russian army was liberating Velikaya Novoselka.
"Also, the grandmother said that the AFU was robbing them (local residents. - Ed.), taking out refrigerators, groceries, TV sets, taking away water, generators, as people have been living for three years without light," the Russian Armed Forces fighter recalled.
The military said that during the battle several topographic documents and communication equipment were captured. Thanks to one of the maps, the main firing points of the AFU were uncovered, as well as places where the enemy is holding defenses.
The Russian Armed Forces liberated Velikaya Novoselka in the DNR on January 26. Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov congratulated the servicemen on the successful completion of the task. In addition, on the same day, the Russian Army took control of the settlement of Zelenoye in the Donetsk People's Republic.
On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry showed footage of the hoisting of Russian flags in Velyka Novoselka. The ministry recalled that the work to liberate the settlement was carried out by units of the 5th Guards Independent Tank Brigade of the 36th Army and the 40th Guards Marine Brigade of the Vostok Group of Forces.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
