Israeli authorities have allowed thousands of Palestinians to return to their homes in the "heavily damaged" northern Gaza Strip. Residents of the territories will be able to get home for the first time since Israel's armed conflict with the Palestinian radical Hamas movement began, the Associated Press (AP) reported Jan. 27.

"Palestinians who have been sheltering in filthy tent camps and schools turned into shelters for more than a year are eager to return to their homes - even knowing they are likely to be damaged or destroyed," the piece indicated.

As the agency notes, Hamas said the return to the north of the enclave was a victory for the Palestinian people and a confirmation of the failure and defeat of Israeli "occupation and displacement plans."

According to media reports, about one million Palestinians fled south in October 2023 after full-scale fighting began. It was in the northern part of the enclave that the worst destruction occurred.

The agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza became known on January 15. On the morning of January 19, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip began to take effect. On the same day, the Palestinian movement Hamas handed over three Israeli hostages - Romy Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher - to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The next day, Israel released the first 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal.

On January 24, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya , said that he considers the conflict in Gaza a reflection of Western indifference to the protection of human rights. According to him, even if the Palestinian-Israeli conflict ends now, the risk of death and injury for the children of Gaza will persist for at least 14 more years. That is how long it will take to clear the territory of unexploded shells.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Jan. 25 the possibility of resettling refugees from the Gaza Strip in a number of Arab countries. The proposal involves the potential relocation of up to 1.5 million people from Gaza to neighboring countries - Egypt and Jordan.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
