The state of California has organized a collection of signatures for leaving the United States, calling the procedure Calexit by analogy with Brexit - the UK's exit from the European Union (EU). This was reported by The New York Post (NYP) on January 25.

It is noted that the procedure was launched after the petition received official registration.

"If passed, the proposed measure, Calexit, <...> will be placed on the ballot in 2028 and will put the question before voters: whether California should secede from the United States and become a free and independent country," the article says.

In order for an initiative to be placed on the popular referendum, it must gather more than 50 percent signatures of support from the general electorate. However, even if the majority votes for the state to become independent, before that a special commission will still be convened to analyze the consequences of such a decision and provide an official report.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump promised the Los Angeles neighborhoods affected by the fires in California to increase the water supply. The American leader noted that we are talking about "unlimited water", which comes from the west coast, partly from Canada. And he said he had signed decrees to that effect.

Multiple wildfires in Los Angeles began on January 7. ABC News reported on January 12 that at least 24 people have died in the California wildfires. Another 10 were reported missing. January 14, it became known that the damage from the fires raging in California is estimated at more than $250 billion.
