The Spanish Navy, together with the FBI, detained the Bahamian-flagged vessel Baltic Summer with crew members from Russia off the coast of Portugal. This was reported by The Maritime Executive with reference to the police.
It is noted that the ship was traveling from the port of Puerto Bolivar to St. Petersburg, on board there were 23 people.
"Spanish and American security forces seized a ship with a Russian crew, headed for St. Petersburg. Sailors were kept in the port for three days and threatened with weapons, accused of smuggling," - stated in the material of the publication.
According to the publication, the crew members were suspected of allegedly smuggling drugs from South America. On the ship, most of the sailors were citizens of Russia and Belarus. During searches on the ship were opened containers - several refrigerated trucks were unloaded on land.
In addition, it is indicated that the crew members were detained in the port for three days. The crew was not allowed to call the consul on board. After checks and examinations, the sailors were released to the port of destination, and the container ship was sent to the Spanish port of Vigo.
Earlier, on January 26, Swedish prosecutors launched an investigation and detained the vessel, which is accused of sabotage after the breakage of an undersea cable of the company "Latvian State Radio Television Center" (LVRTC) in the Baltic Sea.
An undersea fiber optic cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged on January 26 in the Baltic Sea. It is noted that the company's monitoring systems recorded interruptions in data transmission on the section between Latvian Ventspils and Swedish Gotland.
