Belarusian authorities release US citizen


U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the Belarusian authorities had released and handed over to the United States an American citizen detained earlier. He said this on January 26 in the social network X (former Twitter).
"Belarus has just unilaterally released an innocent American woman, Anastasia Nyhfer, who was arrested by [former U.S. President] Joe Biden," he wrote.
He did not provide other circumstances about the release of the citizen.
Earlier, January 24, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 15 convicts. Eight of those serving a sentence for extremist crimes were pardoned: three men and five women (one of them pregnant).
January 18, Lukashenko pardoned 23 people, who had committed crimes of extremist orientation. The press service of the Belarusian president also added that 14 of the pardoned had chronic diseases, while 12 had children.
Before that, December 28, 2024, the Belarusian leader pardoned 20 people, who had been convicted of extremist crimes. It was reported that all the convicted had applied for pardon and expressed remorse for their actions.
