- French politician Filippo called for lifting sanctions against Russian Federation and leaving the EU

Sanctions against Russia, which weaken the European Union (EU), should be canceled. This was stated by the leader of the French party "Patriots" Florian Philippot on January 26.
"For the sake of peace, let's cancel these sanctions that are weakening us and leave the EU as soon as possible," the politician wrote on his page in the social network X (former Twitter).
The head of the party called anti-Russian restrictionist measures stupid. He recalled that on January 31 Hungary may veto the extension of restrictions, and Europe is so hysterical about it that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk actually threatened his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban with war.
Earlier, on January 22, Orban called on the EU to reconsider the policy of sanctions against Russia. The head of the Hungarian government noted that with the help of these restrictions it was not possible to stop the conflict in Ukraine, nor to damage the Russian economy, nor to find a substitute for Russian energy from any other sources for Europe.
Later, on January 25, Tusk accused Orban of a pro-Russian stance because of these words and said that consequences await the Hungarian prime minister for such views. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova noted on the same day that this is what Western democracy looks like, Gazeta.Ru adds.
Before that, on December 18, 2024, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced the preparation of the 16th package of sanctions against Russia. In addition, she called on European countries to support Kiev, which has made steps forward to membership in the European Union (EU).
Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
