The South Korean prosecutor's office has charged President Yun Seok-yol with organizing a mutiny in connection with the imposition of martial law last month. This is reported on January 26 by the agency Yonhap.

It is noted that he became the first sitting president in the history of South Korea, who was indicted while in detention. It was filed just a day before his detention was due to end.

He is also believed to have sent military forces to parliament in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from voting against declaring martial law, the agency specified.

The situation in South Korea escalated in early December 2024, when Yun Seok-yol declared martial law. The reason for such a step he called the threat of paralysis of power, arising from attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. The commander of the emergency regime, Army Chief of Staff Park Ahn-soo, said that until martial law is lifted, the activities of parliament, political parties and associations are banned in the republic.

Yoon Seok-yeol was arrested on Jan. 15, a detention designed to last 48 hours, during which the court was to decide on further imprisonment.

On Jan. 19 (Jan. 18 Moscow time), Seoul's Western District Court ordered the South Korean leader's detention. Supporters of the president pogromed the court after the ruling.
