Media reported disagreements in the Trump administration over imposing new duties

A disagreement has emerged among the aides of US President Donald Trump regarding the introduction of new duties on products from other countries. This was reported by Politico on January 25.

According to the newspaper, many believe that Trump has not yet made a final decision on which path to follow regarding the imposition of duties, as well as when exactly he will impose them.

"The startling level of uncertainty surrounding the duties is the first and most striking example of the split in Trump's inner circle over an important policy issue," the newspaper said in its piece.

Some officials are convinced that we should expect "comprehensive duties" in the next couple of months, while others hope that the delay in imposing tariffs is just a negotiating tactic during which "Trump will declare victory and back down."

The newspaper also informed that Trump's economic officials are already holding a series of conversations with potentially affected industries in an attempt to understand the impact the tariffs will have and figure out how best to structure them.

On Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, Trump announced plans to create the Foreign Revenue Service, which would regulate duties on goods imported into the United States.

On January 22, Politico Europe reported that the European Union (EU) and the UK have prepared retaliatory measures in case Donald Trump raises duties on goods from European countries. It was specified that officials hope that they will be able to convince Trump to refuse to impose "punitive tariffs" on European products. Nevertheless, if this happens, they are ready to apply retaliatory measures.
