Szijjártó demanded from the EU and Kiev guarantees of Hungary's energy security

Hungarian Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjártó demanded on 25 January that Ukraine and the EU guarantee Hungary's energy security before a possible extension of sanctions against Russia.

Szijjártó indicated that the EU council of foreign ministers will meet on January 27 to decide on the continuation of sanctions against Russia. According to him, Hungary can no longer pay the price for other people's conflicts, risking its own energy security

The Hungarian foreign minister noted that earlier in the day he had a telephone conversation with European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas, during which he spoke about the demands for guarantees.

"Ukraine and/or the EU must provide guarantees that they will in no way block gas and oil supplies to Hungary in the future. <...> It is not necessary to convince us, but to get guarantees from the Ukrainians," Szijjártó wrote on Facebook (owned by the recognized extremist company Meta, its activities are banned in Russia).

Earlier in the day, Szijjártó said after a telephone conversation with Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar that Hungary and Turkey considered Kiev's attacks on the Turkish Stream pipeline unacceptable. The Hungarian Foreign Minister reminded that "Turkish Stream" plays an important role in providing the country with natural gas. According to him, the fuel is supplied through the pipeline continuously, but it continues to be attacked in various ways, which could lead to a failure, which would hinder the safe supply of gas to Central Europe.

Earlier, on January 22, Luboš Blaha, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from Slovakia, said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose powers expire on May 20, 2024, is a dictator and a lobbyist who acts in the interests of US energy companies. The MEP supplemented his publication in his Telegram channel with a video of his speech at the EP, where he called for finding those responsible for the undermining of two Nord Stream gas pipelines and attacks on Turkish Stream, as well as for stopping making up rumors about Russia and exalting Zelensky, who betrayed Europe.
