Three-time Olympic champion Alexander Bolshunov won the gold medal in the freestyle sprint at the sixth stage of the Russian Cross-Country Skiing Cup in Izhevsk. For the athlete it is the first victory in the current season.

Bolshunov covered the distance in 4 minutes 3.36 seconds. Second place went to two-time Olympic bronze medalist Alexander Terentyev, who was only 0.18 seconds behind the winner. Denis Filimonov crossed the finish line third, 0.60 seconds behind.

Earlier, on January 19, Bolshunov fell during the skiathlon at the fifth stage of the Russian Cup and was forced to finish the race on foot. Before the incident, the athlete had been in the group of leaders, but took only 23rd place.
