Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Qatar's Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani discussed the tasks of international assistance in stabilizing the situation in Syria during a telephone conversation on January 25.
"The foreign ministers expressed their support for preserving the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of this country. They stressed the importance of broad international support in order to promote the earliest possible stabilization of the situation in Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
The foreign ministers of both countries also discussed the reconstruction of Syria within the framework of a comprehensive post-conflict settlement process in the interests of the citizens of the state, regardless of their political beliefs and ethno-religious affiliation.
In addition, the foreign ministers considered the topic of further development of friendly relations between Russia and Qatar, including cooperation in trade and economic, investment and cultural spheres. Lavrov and Al-Thani also discussed the schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts.
Earlier, on January 23, Lavrov discussed the situation in Syria with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan during a telephone conversation. They noted the importance of joint efforts aimed at resolving the situation in Syria, taking into account the legitimate rights of all citizens of the country.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on December 8, 2024, that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Syria's national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces said it was working to form a transitional authority. The country is expected to hold a referendum.
The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed groups in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
