Osteoma is a rare benign disease characterized by an overgrowth of bone tissue, most commonly the bones of the skull. It is usually diagnosed after the age of 40 with equal frequency in men and women. This was told to "Izvestia" on January 27 by Suna Isakova, a medical oncologist of the medical company "SberZdorovye".

"The reasons for the occurrence of osteomas are currently unknown, it is assumed a connection with the transferred trauma or infectious process. In rare cases, multiple appearances of these formations occur in a genetic disease - Gardner syndrome. As a rule, osteomas have no symptoms and are discovered accidentally. In most cases, a CT scan is sufficient to establish the diagnosis, but sometimes an atypical-looking osteoma is punctured to evaluate the cells of the mass," she said.

According to the doctor, osteoma is treated only surgically and if the patient has complaints related to the disease. Depending on the localization of the formation, these can be, for example, headache, smell impairment, double vision.

"In the case of a patient with osteoma does not bother any of its manifestations, the formation is not removed, as it is benign and does not pose a threat to health," - concluded the specialist.

Earlier, on December 4, doctor-oncologist of the medical company "SberZdorovye" Suna Isakova told "Izvestia" that malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity and oropharynx are relatively rare - less than 10 cases per 100 thousand people per year. The cause of their development is considered to be tobacco in various forms (chewing, in the form of cigarettes), as well as the use of strong alcohol, infection with human papillomavirus, especially the 16th and 18th types.
