- Trump announced his intention to reorganize the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency

US President Donald Trump allowed the possibility of reorganization or final liquidation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Department of Homeland Security. This was reported by CNN on January 24.
According to the channel, during a trip to the state of North Carolina, affected by Hurricane Helen, the American leader said that FEMA is not coping with its duties. He characterized the agency as slow, overly bureaucratic and too costly for the federal government.
"FEMA has turned out to be a disaster. I think we're going to recommend that FEMA go away and we're going to pay directly - we're going to pay a percentage to the state and the state is going to have to fix it (Effects of the Emergency. - Ed.)," CNN quoted Trump as saying.
The head of state added that states should independently solve problems arising in their territories, as governors "can handle anything very quickly."
Hurricane Helen hit the United States in September 2024. The natural disaster affected six states: North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia. More than 220 people died as a result, with many missing. At the peak of the disaster , more than 1 million households in the state were without power. In the aftermath, Trump and Congressman Paul Gosar criticized the U.S. administration for not doing enough to help the victims.
