Trump stripped his former COVID-19 adviser Fauci of his security detail
US President Donald Trump has withdrawn the security of his former COVID-19 advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, which was provided and paid for by the National Institutes of Health. This was reported by CNN on Friday, January 24.
"I think you know when you're in government <...> at some point your security goes away and you know you can't have it forever," Trump said during an event in North Carolina where he was touring storm-damaged sites.
When asked by a reporter if he would feel partially responsible if something happened to Fauci, Trump answered in the negative.
According to the CNN interviewer, given that he continues to face constant threats due to his public role during the COVID-19 pandemic, Fauci has now hired his own private security detail.
Earlier on January 23, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is preparing an executive order that would suspend funding for virus research. The executive order would strip scientists of U.S. funding for research that alters viruses and explores their new capabilities, including their ability to defy drug treatments.
