South Sudan lifts ban on a number of social media platforms
South Sudan has lifted a ban imposed two days ago on the work of social networks TikTok and Facebook (owned by the recognized extremist company Meta, its activities are banned in Russia). This was reported by AFP on January 24.
The temporary ban was introduced after the spread of footage of violence in Sudan.
It is reported that the authorities lifted the restrictions due to the concerns of citizens and human rights organizations.
"Our target was the distributors of such malicious videos," Barron 's newspaper quotes Napoleon Adok, director general of the national communications directorate, as saying.
Earlier, on January 23, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia plans to open diplomatic missions in Niger, Sierra Leone and South Sudan in the near future.
Prior to that, on January 14, Anatoly Bashkin, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Africa Department, told Izvestia that Russia plans to further expand its diplomatic presence in Africa. He noted that in Niamey (Niger) and Freetown (Sierra Leone) it is a question of resuming the activities of representative offices. And the embassy in South Sudan will be established from scratch: there have never been Russian diplomats permanently working in this country because South Sudan gained independence only in 2011, he specified.
