The West has turned a blind eye to the killing of children in the Gaza Strip and has not called on those responsible to be punished, which shows the real attitude of Western countries to the protection of human rights. This was reported on January 24 by Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, at a meeting of the organization's Security Council (SC) convened by Russia on the situation of children in the Gaza Strip.

"It is noteworthy that the Europeans, who like to present themselves as champions of human rights, do not issue calls to bring to justice those who kill children in Gaza. Moreover, a number of them have not even stopped supplying arms to Israel. The war in Gaza has truly become a litmus test of the West's real approach to the protection of human rights," he said.

Thus, Nebenzya said that the total number of dead Palestinian children is at least 14.5 thousand for the entire period of the conflict. According to his data, about 475 minors per month are seriously injured due to the use of explosive weapons in the Gaza Strip.

According to him, even if the Palestinian-Israeli conflict stops now, the risk of death and injury for the children of Gaza will remain for at least 14 more years, as that is how long it will take to clear the territory of unexploded shells.

Russia's permanent representative to the UN concluded that even the surviving children in Gaza will not be able to live on an equal footing with their peers in regions not affected by the conflict, as it will take them a long time to recover their psyche, which has been shattered by post-war events.

Earlier, on January 21, Nebenzya said that the ceasefire in Gaza should be a step toward a long-term settlement. According to him, the US, citing its so-called quiet diplomacy, has made sure that the SC does not interfere with Israel's actions on the ground.

The ceasefire regime in the Gaza Strip began in the morning of January 19. At that time, the Palestinian Hamas movement handed over three Israeli hostages - Romy Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher - to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The next day, Israel released the first 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas subjected Israeli territory to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
