UN backs possible talks between Putin and Trump
The UN supports possible talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump. This was stated by Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the organization's secretary general, during a briefing for journalists on January 24.
"We support any talks between the leaders of the US and Russia, and we hope they will continue to seek dialog," TASS quoted him as saying.
The day before, Trump said he wanted to meet with Putin as soon as possible to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The leader of the United States noted that he intends to see the Russian President to stop the wasting of millions of lives.
Earlier in the day, Putin said that their relationship with the American leader is trusting and pragmatic. The Russian head of state said that there is no fault of the Russian Federation in the fact that the previous US administration refused contacts with the Russian side, adding that Moscow has never refused from negotiations.
Also, on January 23, Donald Trump expressed hope that his team is already making great efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The US President promised to put an end to the conflict, but did not provide details.
On January 20, Trump was inaugurated, after which he reiterated that he plans to meet with Putin as soon as possible and discuss the conflict in Ukraine. In turn, the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis a priority for Trump. According to him, "part of the preparatory work" has begun.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian President on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
