According to legend, St. Tatiana lived in Rome in the second half of the II - early III centuries. Her parents were wealthy people who secretly professed Christianity. They brought up their daughter in the spirit of piety and from early childhood took her with them to the night services in the catacombs, where the faithful came who could not openly visit the temples.

When she grew up, Tatiana decided to devote herself to the service of the Lord. She gave up her rich inheritance and married life in order to care for the poor, the sick, and orphans, and to instruct new converts in the faith. For her infinite devotion to Christ and virtue, she was ordained a deaconess of the Roman Church.

During the time of Emperor Alexander Severus, persecution of Christians began again in the Roman Empire. The city governor Ulpianus ordered all the inhabitants of the capital to sacrifice to idols. Those who refused were imprisoned and put on trial. St. Tatiana was among those arrested. When she was ordered to worship Apollo, she began to pray, and the statue of the deity broke into many pieces.

After that, the saint was subjected to terrible tortures, urging her to renounce God, but the girl remained steadfast. Finally the executioners decided to give her to the wild beasts. The martyr was thrown into the arena of the Colosseum to the lion, but to the surprise of the spectators near Tatiana the predator behaved like a domestic cat: he caressed her hands and licked her feet. Then the saint was sentenced to be burned, but the fire did not harm her.

In anger, the city governor ordered Tatiana to be stabbed to death with a sword. Many of the emperor's servants, impressed by the steadfastness of the martyr and believing in Christ, perished with her.

Until the middle of the XVIII century Tatiana's Day remained exclusively a church holiday. However, on January 25 (January 12, O.S.), 1755 in Russia, it acquired another meaning - on this day Empress Catherine II signed a decree on the establishment in Moscow "one university and two gymnasiums". Ivan Shuvalov was appointed curator of the new university. According to legend, he specially submitted the documents for signing on January 25, so that the historical event coincided with the name day of his mother Tatiana Rostislavskaya.

And in 1850 students of the Moscow Imperial University (modern Moscow State University) established a holiday in honor of the founding of their alma mater. So Tatiana's Day became also Student's Day, and the holy martyr began to be honored as the patroness of students of universities and colleges.
