Police reported the symbolic nature of a children's wedding in the Astrakhan region

The wedding of children in the Astrakhan region was of a symbolic nature. This was reported by the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the region on January 24.

"It is established that it (wedding ritual. - Ed.) was symbolic in nature and was not an official registration of marriage," - stated in the message of the agency.

In addition, the Department of Internal Affairs of the region specified that the children live with their families. Officially formalize their relationship they will be able only after reaching the legal age. City police officers conducted explanatory work with the legal representatives of minors.

The day before in the Astrakhan region police officers checked the information about the "wedding of children", the video of which was published in social networks. It was specified that the video appeared in social networks at least on December 24, 2024. It is claimed to show a "gypsy wedding" of a 13-year-old girl and a boy who is allegedly nine years old.

State Duma deputy Nina Ostanina called to raise the issue of raising children in Roma communities in connection with the "wedding" near Astrakhan. According to her, the tradition of creating families of young children deprives them of their childhood.

Before that, on January 22, the Associated Press reported that the Iraqi parliament passed a law allowing marriages with girls from nine years old. It was noted that Islamic courts were allowed to decide on marriages based on their interpretation of Islam, which could lead to marriages with teenage girls or even children as young as nine years old.
