- FIDE allowed chess players from the Russian Federation under the age of 18 to participate in team competitions
Chess players from Russia and Belarus have been officially admitted in a neutral status to youth competitions in the category of under 18 years of age and competitions for players with disabilities. The International Chess Federation announced the relevant decision on January 24 (FIDE).
It is noted that the decision was made after consultations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). After that, the Federation Council instructed the Deputy President of FIDE to formulate specific conditions under which neutral teams can be admitted and formed.
"This decision reflects FIDE's commitment to a balance between inclusivity and responsibility. We have thoroughly discussed everything, consulted with the IOC, received clear instructions and support, and made sure that our approach meets both humanitarian considerations and the principles of international sport," said Viswanathan Anand, Vice President of FIDE, 15th World chess champion from India.
In November 2024 Russian chess players won the blitz at the Tata Steel Chess India Open tournament in India, winning the entire podium. According to the results, the first place was taken by grandmaster Katerina Lagno, who scored 11.5 points out of a possible 18.
