- The economist predicted the failure of Trump's threats to impose duties against Russia

Russia's economic growth under sanctions is really impressive. This can be seen in the growth of trade turnover and in the strengthening of international economic cooperation, which has now become much more stable compared to the period before the imposition of sanctions, Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at the State University of Economics, told Izvestia on January 24.
Earlier, the Associated Press (AS) reported that the president's threats USA Donald Trump is likely to impose new sanctions on Russian exports to the United States if the Russian Federation does not reach a "deal" on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict in the near future. href="https://iz.ru/1826744/2025-01-22/ap-predreklo-krah-ugrozam-trampa-vvesti-posliny-protiv-rossii-iz-za-ukrainy?utm_source=yxnews&utm_medium=desktop&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fdzen.ru%2Fnews%2Finstory%2F6df1fc3a-7921-56c0-b736-c8b134edfe0d" target="_blank">will not work.
"I absolutely agree with the Associated Press in principle. Firstly, a lot of restrictions are already in effect today, and in general it is absolutely obvious that the Russian economy is coping well with the current restrictions," Chirkov explained.
According to him, the rate of economic growth in Russia exceeds that of most Western countries, with the exception of small or extremely small states. In addition, Russia is significantly ahead of European countries in terms of GDP growth and significantly surpasses the United States.
According to the expert, Europe is on the verge of an economic depression. The United States is currently showing economic growth rates, but is significantly behind the leaders of the BRICS countries.
"The United States thinks that, in general, the long—term maintenance of such sanctions is feasible, but it is suicidal for the economies of Western countries," Chirkov summed up.
Before that, on January 22, Trump has threatened to raise taxes and impose new sanctions on Russian exports to the United States if there is a conflict on Ukraine will not be settled soon. The American president called the "deal" itself a service he provided to the Russian Federation.
At the same time, on January 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin Putin stated that Moscow is open to dialogue with the new administration of the US president on the Ukrainian conflict. The purpose of the settlement is not a short truce, but a long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of people, he stressed.
