Travelers most often do not want to rely solely on luggage insurance by the air carrier, and conclude a separate contract with insurance companies, Olesya Adamushkina, general director of the Dotur travel agency, told Izvestia on January 25. She explained what to do in case of luggage damage.

"If luggage is lost or damaged during the trip, the traveler should contact the hotel administration, the airline or local law enforcement agencies to record what happened. If the traveler was refused to issue a document on the loss or damage of luggage, this refusal should also be made in writing," she said.

The expert noted that immediately after returning from a trip should write an application to the insurance company, where the circumstances of the insured event will be specified, attaching the original document, fixing the fact of loss or damage of luggage, luggage tags, receipt confirming the receipt of compensation from the airline, and so on. At the same time, it is important to remember that if abroad they issue, for example, in law enforcement agencies a document on the theft of luggage not in Russian and English, but in any other language, it is necessary to order its official translation at your own expense, as the insurance company does not reimburse these expenses.

"Situations that are covered by insurance are specified in the baggage insurance contract - read the terms and conditions carefully. As a rule, such situations include the loss of luggage by the carrier during the trip, loss, total destruction or damage to luggage or luggage items due to natural disasters or fire, robbery, riots," Adamushkina added.

According to her, the insurance company will not reimburse the cost of luggage if the situation occurred through the fault of the traveler, for example, if he was drunk or his belongings were seized by local police. The insurance does not cover emergencies related to radiation exposure, for example. In addition, damage to property by insects or rodents is also likely to be excluded from insurance claims, the expert said.

"The value of the property is determined with the help of checks, receipts and so on provided by the traveler. If there is a dispute with the insurance company, the passenger has the right to appeal to the court with a claim for compensation for moral damage, expenses for legal services, a fine for failure to fulfill consumer demands in a voluntary manner," - concluded Adamushkina.

Earlier, on January 22, during a press conference in the MICE "Izvestia" on the topic "New tourist season: plans of Russians for 2025" experts advised travelers who plan to go abroad, take out insurance against non-travel. At the same time, Natalia Osipova, executive director of the Alliance of Travel Agencies, noted that Thailand, Egypt, Maldives, Indonesia, Cuba and China will be among the popular destinations this year.
