People rallied in Transnistria amid gas supply cuts

Thousands of people have staged rallies in Transnistrian cities against the background of the cessation of gas supplies from Russia to the republic. This was reported by Novosti Pridnestrovia on its website on January 24.
"If the authorities in Chisinau really wanted to resolve the energy crisis, they would have done it immediately. Many other problems could have been avoided as well," the publication quoted Vladimir Emelianov, chairman of the United Council of Labor Collectives of Transnistria, who participated in the rally, as saying.
The protesters in the cities held placards "Moldova, skip the gas", "no to genocide of the Transnistrian people", "Moldova is guilty of the deaths of Transnistrian citizens".
It is noted that the rallies are taking place in the cities of Bender, Ribnitsa and Dubasari in unrecognized Transnistria. The protesters demand from the Moldovan authorities to solve the problem with gas supplies.
On the same day, the president of the unrecognized republic, Vadim Krasnoselsky, said that the situation in Transnistria against the backdrop of energy shortages remains difficult, with gas supplies sufficient for about two days. According to him, the temperature in some apartments has dropped to 10 degrees Celsius and it is especially hard for people who need social support, including the elderly and the lonely.
On January 19, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that she considers gas supplies from Russia to Transnistria illegal because they violate anti-Russian sanctions. She also linked the assistance to the DMR to the condition of withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from there.
Gas supplies from Russia to Moldova and Transnistria stopped on January 1 due to Ukraine 's refusal to extend the agreement on transit through its territory and debts of the Moldovan side to Gazprom. In mid-January, it became known that Russia was ready to provide assistance to the DMR and start humanitarian gas supplies.
