Environmentalists named red-listed animals living in Moscow parks


Beavers, weasels and russak hares are found in the natural areas of Moscow, reported on January 24 on the official portal of the government and the mayor of the capital.
"Of all the animals included in the Red Book of Moscow, beavers, weasels and russak hares are most often found in the natural areas of the city. Such conclusions were received by specialists of the capital Department of nature management and environmental protection by the results of the monitoring," - stated in the material.
In particular, the beaver in the capital's Red Book is assigned the third category of rarity. In 2024 it was seen in the national park "Losiny Ostrov" and in natural-historical parks "Ostankino", "Moskvoretsky" and "Bittsevsky forest". The animal leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle and swims with the help of webbed feet and a paddle-like tail.
The same category is assigned to the weasel, which last year met in "Elk Island", "Bittsevsky Forest", "Tsaritsyno", "Izmailovo" and not only. It has a thin and long body and short paws with sharp claws, as well as small rounded ears.
In turn, listed in the Red Book under the first category of rarity hare-russak was seen last year in the parks "Kuzminki-Lublino", "Bittsevsky Forest", "Izmailovo" and "Tsaritsyno". This species is larger than the Arctic hare - it is characterized by longer ears and a pointed tail, and does not turn white in winter.
When meeting on a walk with an injured wild animal should contact the hotline of the unified reference service of the Moscow government, recalled in the Department of nature management.
In November 2024 it was reported that in Moscow again settled birds, which were considered extinct. According to experts' calculations, 154 species of birds live in the capital, 70 of them are included in the Red Book.
