- Prof. Malinen did not rule out escalation in Ukraine in Trump's first months in office
An escalation in Ukraine is possible in the first months of US President Donald Trump's term in office. This was stated by Tuomas Malinen, a professor at the University of Helsinki, on January 22.
"We warn of a deepening escalation that may occur in Ukraine during the first 100 days of Donald Trump's second term," he wrote in an article for GnS Economics.
According to the professor, Trump is inclined to use scare tactics against the Kiev regime in an effort to force Ukraine to use more military resources. He noted that this could lead to a further prolongation of hostilities and create new conditions for negotiations.
In addition, Malinen described Trump's main geopolitical challenge as recognizing the changed global power structure. The professor emphasized that U.S. military power has become vulnerable, adding that Russia has "effectively defeated two armies in Ukraine" that were NATO-equipped. Against the background of Ukraine's economic difficulties and defeats, the question of the need to start a peace process is being raised more and more often, the expert summarized.
On the same day, the media reported that Trump, despite his high-profile statements, has no leverage over Russia and Ukraine.
Before that, on January 22, Trump threatened to raise taxes and impose new sanctions on Russian exports to the United States if the conflict in Ukraine is not resolved soon. The American president called the "deal" itself a favor he was doing for Russia.
In response to such statements of the American leader, the Deputy of the State Duma from Crimea Mikhail Sheremet called on the US President not to talk to Russia in the language of force. He noted that Trump can influence the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, but so far, except for loud statements, there have been no substantive proposals from him.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote that Trump instructed his special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in 100 days.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
