US President Donald Trump came to power at a dangerous time for Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024). The New York Times (NYT) reported on January 23 that.

"Trump came to power at a dangerous time for Zelensky in Ukraine. <...> For the politician, another problem has also appeared: a revived political opposition in the country, inspired by a possible cease-fire," the publication stated.

In addition, the publication reported that Zelensky's rating is declining, which may weaken his position as a Ukrainian leader ahead of the Ukrainian presidential election, Gazeta.Ru adds.

On the same day, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Dubinskyy, who is in jail, called Zelensky a pariah to whom it was time to say goodbye. In his opinion, the Ukrainian leader is considered a thief and usurper inside the country, who is responsible for Ukraine's imminent defeat in the conflict, while abroad he is considered a "stubborn fool".

On January 13, former Pentagon adviser Colonel Douglas McGregor said that Zelensky should be in prison until a plan for his death penalty is developed. According to him, the Ukrainian leader both by himself and by the hands of the security forces under his control has done more to destroy statehood in Ukraine than anyone else in the entire world.

Before that, on December 26, 2024, Dubinsky said that Zelensky had lost the trust of his people and the army of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as commander-in-chief. He emphasized that the ability to hold combat positions has been undermined due to the high level of desertion, as well as "bestial" treatment of servicemen and because of the flourishing corruption in the country.

At the same time, Spyridon Kilinkarov, a former Ukrainian MP and member of the international public movement "The Other Ukraine," told Izvestia that Zelensky bears personal responsibility for the current conflict and many residents of the country realize this. No one has any doubts that the election of the head of state should be held in the near future.
