NATO members plan to offer Ukraine two security guarantees in exchange for a "deal" with Russia. This was reported by Foreign Policy magazine on January 22.

"In the first case, NATO members commit to providing Kiev with substantial economic and military assistance for several years after the cease-fire agreement is concluded," the publication said.

If this guarantee is realized, Ukraine may get the opportunity to join the North Atlantic alliance.

The second option is that the West will provide Ukraine with protection "under its nuclear umbrella, and Europe, the USA and Canada will be obliged to defend Ukraine,"Gazeta.Ruadded. However, the magazine expressed doubts about the feasibility of such an approach.

Earlier, on January 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose powers expired on May 20, 2024, said that the Ukrainian side was ready to settle the conflict, but on condition that NATO would provide guarantees on the territories controlled by Kiev.

Also in the interview, the Ukrainian president said that Kiev was ready to hold talks with the United States and European countries on the settlement of the conflict at the end of January. At the same time, Zelensky could not give an answer to the question of whether it is possible to sign peace agreements without the condition of Ukraine's membership in NATO.

Before that, on December 5, 2024, it became known that NATO countries at a summit in Brussels discussed options for providing security guarantees to Ukraine that would "not provoke" the Russian side. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte tried to focus the countries' attention on supplying weapons to Ukraine so that it would stand "in a position of strength" by the time the talks begin.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that the Russian side has never refused to negotiate on Ukraine, but not on the basis of "ephemeral demands" but on the basis of the parameters agreed in Istanbul.
